From Braai to Beautiful Chaos: The Charl and Simoné Story
An Afternoon That Started with a Braai
What began as a relaxed practice photoshoot quickly turned into something truly unforgettable. It started with a casual South African braai, the smell of wood smoke in the air, the sound of laughter drifting across the property, and the easy comfort of friends enjoying the day. I had brought along a few Enola Gaye smoke grenades, thinking they might add a playful twist. At first, it was simply for fun, a splash of colour against the open air. But as the smoke swirled and the light caught it perfectly, the atmosphere shifted, and suddenly this was not just a practice shoot anymore, it was a story unfolding in real time.
The Moment the Magic Began
Charl’s family were the first in front of the lens, their joy radiating in every frame. Then Simoné, his then girlfriend, stepped in, and the connection between them was undeniable. Playful glances, shared smiles, and those quiet, unspoken moments of love that speak louder than words. The joy was contagious. Another family who lived on the property joined in with their little one, adding even more warmth and spontaneity to the day. Even the family dogs made their way into the spotlight, tails wagging and eyes bright, adding that extra touch of personality to the gallery.
From Candid Chaos to Professional Portraits

Between the bursts of colour and the candid laughter, we also took a few professional headshots for Charl and Simoné. Even in these more Structured frames, their connection shone through, especially in the tender moment where Simoné helped Charl adjust his outfit before stepping in front of the camera. It was a small gesture, but one that told a bigger story about care, partnership, and love.
Why Unscripted Moments Matter
This day was a perfect reminder of why I am so passionate about capturing unfiltered, unscripted moments. They are the ones that truly tell a story, the way people look at each other when they think no one is watching, the way laughter fills the air, the way a simple afternoon can turn into a memory you will treasure forever. As a Johannesburg lifestyle photographer, I believe these are the images that matter most. They are not just photographs, they are pieces of life, preserved exactly as they happened.
