Every photographer has a story, and this is mine. It is not polished or perfect, but it is real, filled with passion, persistence, and the belief that photography is about more than pictures. It is about people, connection, and preserving memories. This is the story of how I have been building a photography career in South Africa, step by step, with resilience and heart.

A Passion That Started at Six Years Old

My name is Tarrynn, though most people know me as Tazz. I am an affordable professional photographer in Johannesburg with a natural eye for detail and a love for capturing authentic, personal moments.

Photography has been part of my life since I was six years old. I still remember holding a photograph and realising it was more than just an image, it was a memory frozen in time. That moment planted a seed that grew into a lifelong calling. I would spend hours paging through family albums, fascinated by how a single frame could hold so much emotion, history and meaning.

In 2016, I left a job I valued to follow my dream of becoming a professional photographer. It was not easy, but it was honest. From 2017 to 2021, I studied at The Photography Institute of South Africa, earning an accredited Diploma in Professional Photography, a qualification recognised worldwide. Those years of study gave me a foundation in technical skills, but more importantly, they gave me the confidence to believe that this dream was possible.

Putting in the Work

Since then, I have poured my heart, time and resources into building my career. I have worked tirelessly to grow my name as an affordable, professional photographer who delivers quality without losing the personal touch. Building a photography career in South Africa is not easy, but it has been deeply rewarding.

• Sought mentorship to gain experience in the South African photography industry
• Offered to mop floors, clean studios and work long hours just to learn
• Volunteered to assist with editing, carrying gear and supporting other photographers on shoots
• Applied for internships, even when they stretched my budget, but many were financially out of reach
• Cold called and emailed studios and photographers, often receiving little to no reply
• Joined photography groups and WhatsApp communities to network and learn
• Built my own website, media kit and proposals from scratch
• Invested in essential gear, piece by piece, to keep improving my craft

The truth is, aside from building my own website and investing in gear, most of these offers were met with silence. At first, that was discouraging. But over time, I realised that silence does not mean failure, it means I had to carve my own path. Every “no” or unanswered message has pushed me to keep showing up, to keep creating, and to keep proving that I am serious about this craft.

Turning Silence into Motivation

One of the hardest parts of this journey has been the silence. Sometimes I reached out for guidance and received no reply. At first, that was tough. But over time, I learned to see it differently. Silence has become a teacher. It has taught me to be resourceful, to create my own opportunities, and to keep refining my portfolio until it speaks for itself. Building a career in photography is not about waiting for doors to open, it is about knocking again, finding new doors, and sometimes even building your own. Every unanswered message has been fuel to keep going, to prove that persistence pays off.

Learning from Others

I have been fortunate to connect with international photographers like Ryan Malcolm Campbell (@mr.koa) and Steve Carty (@stevecarty), who generously shared their time and advice. Locally, photographers like Andrew Basson (@andrewbasso_n) and Siyabonga (@siyamel_za) have given insights into the South African market, pricing and client behaviour. Their knowledge has been invaluable, reminding me that while the journey is tough, there are people willing to share their wisdom.

The Bigger Challenge

Without real work experience, it is difficult to grow in different genres — weddings, portraits, events, product photography, documentary work. You can study and practice, but there is no substitute for the lessons you learn on actual jobs, with real clients, real deadlines and real challenges. I am not looking for handouts. I am looking for guidance, mentorship and collaboration opportunities, for a starting point that is more than “just get out there.” I want to learn by doing, to grow by contributing, and to give back by sharing what I have learned with others who will one day walk this same path.
